Don’t let the rain put an end to your outdoor fun! Here are a few tips to keep your little ones warm and dry on all of their adventures…

Rain Suits
For the littlest explorers, it’s hard to beat Tuffo’s Muddy Buddy. For older preschoolers, consider two piece sets. Separates are ideal for potty training, and they are easier for kids to put on and take off by themselves. Look for pants with either stirrups or Velcro at the ankles. A few brands to consider: Grundens (found locally at Seattle Marine and Fishing Supply in Ballard); Columbia; Oakiwear; CeLaVi and Polarn. I was recently told by another mom that REI has stopped making toddler rain gear. You may be able to find some second hand.

Layers
Most of the children in my son’s outdoor preschool wear basic unlined rain suits with layers underneath for warmth. Fleece or cotton lined rain suits are another option, but they give you fewer options to dress/undress depending on the temperature, and the linings can sometimes wick moisture up the sleeves. As fall turns to winter, consider adding a wool or polyester base layer.

Boots
For toddlers, lightweight rain boots such as MyMayu or Stonz are ideal. For preschool and beyond, Bogs are, by far, the most popular brand. They are a bit pricey, but last well and are easy for kids to put on by themselves. Hatley is also a popular option. We had a pair of Stonz when my son was just starting to walk, but we quickly transitioned to MyMayu which we loved. (Note: Sturdy boots like Bogs can also be purchased second hand)

Hats
Typical rain hats don’t provide much warmth so, on colder days, consider adding a knit cap. And don’t forget about the sun! It’s easy to have a sunburn sneak up on you when the weather is colder. On sunny days, my son’s “Play Hat” by Sunday Afternoons goes everywhere he does.

Happy Puddle Stomping!
